The Benefits of Power Steering Rx

This preventative maintenance service removes old worn out fluid and replaces it with new fluid. Under normal operating conditions the power steering fluid degrades as it accumulates contaminants and water. Like engine oil, power steering fluid can also be subjected to extreme temperatures causing the fluid to break down. The results are loss of lubrication and the formation of contaminants and varnish deposits. Worn out power steering fluid can cause valves to stick and accelerate wear in the power steering pump. The results are pump squeal, leaking seals, and chatter. Ignoring these problems can lead to mechanical failure and costly repairs. Power Steering Rx restores the operation of the power steering system, helps avoid costly repairs, and extends its life.

How It Works

This machine is designed to remove and replace power steering fluid in the amount that was originally in the power steering system. That is, if 2 quarts of fluid are removed, 2 quarts of fluid will be replaced. The operation is performed with the engine running and the steering wheel being turned back and forth through its complete limit of travel (stop to stop). Any predetermined amount of fluid can be exchanged up to the capacity of the storage reservoir.

To start this 5-minute service, the desired amount of power steering fluid is put into the new fluid reservoir. Two quarts is sufficient for most light duty vehicles. While the engine is hot and running, the red and black hoses are inserted into the power steering reservoir. The black hose is pushed to the bottom of the reservoir and the red hose is positioned near the top. Both pumps are turned on while the power steering system is being “racked” (turned from one limit stop to the other). The fluid level in the reservoir is noted while the fluid exchange is taking place. The rheostat or the pressure regulators are adjusted to maintain a “full” level in the reservoir. If the power steering fluid level is low, the new fluid pump is toggled on to bring the fluid up to the required level.

Recommended Service Interval

A Power Steering Rx is recommended every 24,000 mi/40,000 km or 24 months.
